Chapter 3 Presentation discussion: DRI challenge Empty Chapter 3 Presentation discussion: DRI challenge

One form of Differential Reinforcement the authors did not discuss was Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible Behavior or DRI. This approach is similar to DRA, however the alternate behavior is also incompatible with the target behavior. For this approach the function of the target behavior and the topography of the target behavior must both be considered carefully. For example if a behavior of striking classmates with the function of escape from instruction is a goal, asking to be excused would be an appropriate alternative behavior, but holding up a sign attached to a desk placed out of arms reach of classmates would be an incompatible behavior.

For our activity please create a discussion post describing a socially or automatically reinforced severe problem behavior and three potential treatments including DRA or DRO, DRI, and one of any of the other treatments described in this chapter. Please reply to one other student either with which approach in their post seems the best option or another approach you feel might be even more effective.

One severe problem behavior that comes to mind that began as an automatically reinforced behavior was eye rubbing that produced a color light show for the client (automatic reinforcement). This behavior became more and more intensity, the family noticed the intensity increasing and began approaching the child, touching her, and telling her not to rub her eyes (attention/social reinforcement). The frequency and intensity of this behavior continued to increase dramatically until it reached a level that began to cause injury to the child's eyes.

Alternate behaviors:
DRA: Look through kaleidoscope (provides similar reinforcement to the "light show" from eye rubbing)
DRO: Request attention from a familiar individual (Provides attention)
DRI: Paint/color/draw colorful pictures (provides colorful images while keeping hands occupied, completely incompatible with eye rubbing while hands are occupied)
